Bastards are allowed to hold a noble rank if they are legitimized. However, dwarves of a higher or equal rank to the bastard in question will typically refer to the dwarf in question as a bastard instead of as their respective rank. Legally, dwarves of a lower rank than a bastard can do this as well, but most dwarves do not dare the wrath of a higher-ranked dwarf noble.

Clan Leader's Spouse
Counsel of Clan Elders and Cadet-Branch Clan Leaders
All other ranking is done via a system of class, then honor, and then age.
Children belong to the clan of the parent that has the higher honor at the time of conception, with the more parent whose clan has the higher honor being the parent that carries the child to term. As dwarves are hermaphroditic, this means that both parents may have children at different times, depending on the changing of ranks of their clans. This can result in siblings that are of different clans due to the time of their conception.
